Textbooks!

Saturday, May 15th, 2004

Well, I got my textbooks from Amazon today. A week after summer session began, but I didn’t need them till now anyway. Why did I order them from Amazon? Well, in terms of price, the experience, the convenience, and the idea of supporting a business pioneer instead of the textbook cartel, it’s better than my college bookstore. In fact, to make direct comparisons:

Amazon.com vs. my college bookstore: Amazon wins.

Amazon.com with express shipping vs. my college bookstore: Amazon wins.

Amazon.com with express shipping vs. my college bookstore with attractive, topless, women cashiers: Amazon wins, barely.

That is why I buy my textbooks from Amazon.com.

So just how much does Amazon.com rock? To the tune of $15, new, shipped for my accounting textbook on Amazon Marketplace (as opposed to $140 new from my college bookstore), and less than $50, shipped, for my philosophy books from Amazon itself. My philosophy books wouldn’t have cost that much more at the Bookie (yes, that’s what they call it), but then again, I didn’t have to stand in line.

Frankly, I don’t know why the Bookie is still in business.

This *is* vacation for me!

As I suspected, taking two classes and working 20 hours a week feels a lot like being on summer vacation, only with slightly more obligations. I don’t even lose free time because I get up earlier to go to class. I suppose that makes my life a very good deal right now. I even have cable television again. I never missed TV, but now that I have it back it’s cool again! Well, maybe I’ll get tired of it.

Also, I enjoy my accounting class. Yes, it’s interesting. I never expected that, and it’s shocking! I want to go into business to win the game, not to keep score!

Finally, the finals are finished.

I had three finals: Econ 102, Phil 101, and Math 202. Then I had to move into another dorm for summer session. Needless to say, I’ve been busy lately, which is one reason I haven’t blogged. Another is the simple fact that I didn’t want to blog, until I saw someone else’s blog and felt weak compared to her. Thank you, Jacqueline Passey.

The next step of the redesign of philwelch.net is to actually integrate the blog. Right now it’s just an inline frame inside the design itself. I’m not a fan of inline frames, so expect integration when I can get around to it. I use Dreamweaver and I’m more of a visual designer than a code monkey, so this will be more of an effort than, say, the redesign itself. Almost. I actually wrangled with the code for the redesign, smacking down the stylesheet to size from the Dreamweaver template I started with. I also merged it with my preexisting stylesheet, which just defined fonts and such.

Anyway, that’s ancient history. Right now I’m taking two summer classes, Introduction to Financial Accounting and Science Fiction and Philosophy. Accounting seems like it’s not going to be difficult it all. I’m just going to take the class and keep up with studying and do the work and do well in it. Science Fiction and Philosophy seems to be interesting. I think I’ll enjoy it. If I keep taking philosophy classes and enjoying it I just might major in philosophy.

Anyway, I’m here in my summer dorm now, McEachern Hall. I have some new quotes, but I’ll put them up some other time. I’ll also blog more often. Well, later, fools.
