Going Home

Saturday, July 31st, 2004

Well, my finals are over. I’m not optimistic about my stats final (I dozed off while studying–guess pulling an all-nighter isn’t the best way to study, imagine that), but I’m quite happy about accounting. Now that that’s all over I can go home, take three weeks off, enjoy my birthday (I’ll be turning 19, everybody) and generally enjoy myself until Fall Semester starts up August 23.

Ironic

You know what’s truly ironic? When you take a class just because you have to for your major, don’t anticipate enjoying it, skip class more often than you attend, and pull an all-nighter before the final, cramming for it—only to find that the subject is actually rather interesting.

Decision Sciences 215 and Accounting 231 finals today. No sleep tonight. It’s time to kick some ass. Then, the journey home, back to lovely Port Angeles for three weeks until fall semester begins and Phil Welch returns to Pullman.

I feel driven!

It looks like my stats package reports the search keyphrases that match philwelch.net when people go Googling for it, so here’s the highlights of July:

middle eastern men acting suspiciously

washing machine stunts

Finally, we geeks can celebrate!

Wednesday, July 28th, 2004

Well, we thought it was all over after the Matrix and Lord of the Rings trilogies were over. There were no other upcoming good, geek-friendly movies coming out. Sure. Star Wars Episode III was coming out, and even though it has a cool title (”Revenge of the Sith”), most of us have written it off after Episodes I and II.

We were wrong.

Check this out. It’s the teaser for the upcoming film version of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and it looks great! Let’s hope it turns out as awesome as the teaser, because if it does, 2005 will be a good year for geeks.

A couple stories I found online

Sunday, July 18th, 2004

I found a couple interesting stories online I thought I’d link to. They’re pretty fascinating, so I thought I’d forward them.

The first is from Women’sWallStreet.com, who go off-topic to share the terrifying story of a family boarding an airliner, only to find a group of 14 seemingly pleasant Middle Eastern men acting very suspiciously during the flight. I don’t have a problem with Middle Eastern men flying in the air. I do have a problem with Middle Eastern men with Syrian passports being allowed to get up during the flight and take their bags to the lavatory to build a bomb.

The second is a story about a man’s adventure in the communist hellhole of North Korea. The best parts are when he describes the shrines to former dictator Kim Il-Sung and current dictator Kim Jong-Il, and the visit to the DMZ between North and South.
