First day of class

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

You know, after summer, when campus is usually very quiet and you can stand on the Terrell Mall and have only so many people in sight you can count them on one hand, being back for the fall semester is quite a difference. It’s very populated and the campus is buzzing with activity. A variety of campus groups, from Christians to Young Democrats, are around promoting themselves. The student bookstore is filled with students getting ripped off on textbook purchases. And the hallways of Todd are crammed with students going to and from classes. Altogether it’s good to be back on a campus that is alive with activity.

New diet

Friday, August 19th, 2005

This is going to come as a shock to those of you who’ve seen my t-shirt reading “For Every Animal You Don’t Eat, I’m Going to Eat Three”. However, as of this moment, Phil Welch is going on a vegetarian diet.

Why, do you ask? Home-cooked meals. I always gain weight when I go home. At school I usually lose the weight pretty soon, but lately the loss hasn’t matched the gain. I need to do something about this. My plan is as follows:

a) For a minimum of either 2 weeks or until I start feeling unhealthy, I will limit myself to salad and fruits (I’m thinking pineapple…mmm.) I will not eat “potato salad” or any other form of salad other than green leafy veggie salad.
a1) “Feeling unhealthy” will be determined by specific symptoms of poor health to be posted here.
b) During said 2 week period (the “feeling healthy” proviso not here applicable), I will drink only water and pure fruit juices.
c) Afterwards, I will start introducing other foods into my diet, avoiding sweets and empty calories. I anticipate the first food I introduce will be meat, because damn do I love meat.
d) I will finally take advantage of the $160 fee I pay to use the student rec center, and actually use the student rec center. Specifics will be decided at a later date.
e) Eating out with others is an exception.

Update, 8/20: I’m gonna go ahead and skip ahead to part 3 now, I felt pretty weak without meat, and I don’t think it’s strictly necessary to go 2 weeks without it. Also, it’s good to get some protein in my system.

It’s started again.

Well that was a refreshing summer break. Now I’m back at WSU. No actual classes until next week, though, so until then I’m working on getting a part-time job and settling in in Pullman again.
