Midnight Locksmith Madness
I’m back in my new pad, which is actually quite remarkable given recent events. Due to a slightly defective lock, the old key I got today, well, almost broke. I had to call a locksmith in the middle of the night and have him copy the broken key. The upside is, I now have a brand new key. The downside is, I had to pay $20 that I technically don’t have and spend a lot of time outside waiting and going slowly insane.
Anyone know if I should expect the landlord to cover this cost?

Of course the landlord should pay!
Phil,
Just buy some new door hardware! You could probably get a set on sale at Home Depot for around $20.00 (I’ve paid as little as $5 for clearance items).
I’m sure you’re smart enough to figure out how to install it. Then your problems will be over.
If you choose to replace the lockset you should obviously get a copy of the new key to your landlord. If he’s willing to spring for the new lock, great. But even if he doesn’t, $20 is a small price to pay for your sanity.

I definitely would go that route if I had a 12 month lease. But since it’s just a 4 month lease, I don’t really care that much. It’s a very nice place—pity the landlord’s too cheap to keep it from turning to shit.
