The axe

Tuesday, January 28th, 2003

So I’m listening to Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” and wondering what should get “the axe”. Here’s a few ideas:

WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE should get the axe. That game show is so pointless without Regis.
MOST BLOGS should get the axe. Except for this one, what blogs really have much of anything? Come on, we don’t wanna know about your love life, we want pointless lists of things that should get the axe!
MANY CIVIL SERVANTS should get the axe. I mean, does this country really need an “Office of Non-Public Education” under the Department of Education? Isn’t the purpose of private schools to avoid the government?
THE FEDERAL INCOME TAX should get the axe. I do not want to work as a serf to the government, satisfying my needs only after paying my taxes to the Master in DC.
BOTTLED WATER should get the axe. Water’s free, man.
GUN CONTROL should get the axe. The empirical evidence suggests that when guns are controlled or banned, like in Jamaica or the UK, crime rates increase. When guns are allowed, crime rates decrease. That is why there’s more crime in the inner cities (where there’s gun control) than in the hills (where the only gun control is good aim). Of course, there’s another reason, which is why
THE WAR ON DRUGS should get the axe. Come ON! The government make these drugs profitable by jailing suppliers, they crowd the prisons by convicting people for possession, and they have the fucking gall to tell us that we’re the ones that cause terrorism and drug cartels? Haven’t these people learned from Prohibition?

And finally…

YASSER ARAFAT should get the axe for being a thug and a terrorist. It was a mistake to ever legitimize him.

Merry Christmas (Eve)

Wednesday, December 25th, 2002

Well, the computer’s back. If you’re a Mac user in Western Washington, go to Micro Center in Lynnwood for repairs. They’re an Apple Specialist, and you can even buy iPods there.

Today, I’m going to give short commentaries on the news.

Bethlehem Christmas: The Israelis lifted the curfew on Bethlehem and allowed people to do stuff, like celebrate Christmas. Good for them. The Palestinians are gonna whine about the Israelis even being there, but it’s Israeli land anyway, antd the Palestinians need to realize that a homeland’s already been set aside for them: Jordan.

North Korea: THEY JUST BROKE AN AGREEMENT, for God’s sake! Why trust them again? No negotiations.

Frist v. Trent Lott: Trent Lott said something stupid and had to be replaced. But not with an anti-gun abortionist.

Storm Blamed for 13 Deaths Heads Northeast: How the hell do you “blame” a storm? I think it’s easy to tell whether or not a storm killed someone or not, no? “Blamed” implies we don’t know, WHEN IN FACT WE DO!

At least it isn’t, “Strom Blamed for 13 Deaths”. If he got the death sentence for that, then we’d have to get Trent Lott to give his eulogy.

Merry Christmas everyone, and have a great holiday season!

Ramblings about personality and politics

Thursday, December 12th, 2002

In my Contemporary Issues class, we’re doing Mock Congress. I’m a Republican from Utah in it, which is probably halfway between what I really am and the opposite of what I am. Sure, I seem like a Republican to most people, but that’s just because I have that kind of personality. You know how Republicans and Democrats have different personalities? I’ve noticed it. But it’s utter lunacy to base your politics on your personality, which is what the mainstream ends up doing. Nah, I’m a libertarian, and there are both “liberal personality” libertarians and “conservative personality” libertarians. In other words, many libertarians are warm and fuzzy, some are not. I don’t tend to have a warm and fuzzy personality, but I can at times.

Arrest in Sniper Case

Friday, October 25th, 2002

This morning, investigators in Maryland captured a man who they believe is the “sniper” responsible for a number of deaths in the DC area.

The media will devote a lot of attention to the fact that he used a Bushmaster AR-15 variant and that that pundits and politicians will demand we should ban AR’s. First, it won’t work. What’s the point of banning a scary-looking centerfire .22 when you can buy illegal, fully automatic AK-47s in South Central Los Angeles? AR-15 variants are used in a very specialized type of riflery competition as well. To ban them would be a travesty.

This case also proves that there’s no need for “ballistic fingerprinting”. They got the rifle from the suspect and did ballistics tests. That’s all that’s needed. Ballistic fingerprinting and gun registration will not solve one single crime. Quality detective work and a right to armed self-defense will.
